Journalist Jacob Steinberg has claimed that Chelsea have not yet given up on signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton.

He took to Twitter to state that they are still hoping to beat Liverpool to a deal for a player who has been their top target for the summer.

Last night was a key one in terms of finding out where Caicedo will be playing his football next season.

After a summer where Stamford Bridge looked the likely destination, it was Liverpool who agreed a British-record fee to bring him in this summer.

The news will be a blow to the Blues if confirmed, and will see them forced to look elsewhere to strengthen their midfield.

However, Steinberg has claimed that they are still in the race and hoping to bring in the player despite his agreed deal with Liverpool.

He said: “Chelsea have not given up and are still trying to beat Liverpool to Caicedo.”

It remains to be seen whether the Blues do look to match the Reds’ bid, which would be a club-record fee just months after they last smashed it.

They brought in Enzo Fernandez back in Janaury, and have been looking this summer for the perfect partner for him.

If they do miss out on Caicedo, it is likely that they return with a bigger bid for Romeo Lavia from Southampton.

They had an offer rejected a couple of days ago for his services, although it was claimed that it was only a couple of million short of the asking fee the Championship side had set.

However, the quality of Caicedo is undoubted, and he was described as ‘incredible’ by Adam Lallana last season.
