Ally McCoist was left blown away by the pass Chelsea’s Thiago Silva produced last night during Brazil’s 4-1 win over South Korea.

Brazil cruised their way into the quarter-finals of the World Cup by thrashing South Korea on Monday evening, living up to the hype of pre-tournament favourites.

Silva, who turned 38 back in September, is still a key player in the Brazil starting line-up.

The Chelsea defender produced a stunning assist last night for the South American giants. His first-time pass from the edge of the box set up Richarlison to finish inside the box.

Thiago Silva pass

ITV pundit McCoist waxed lyrical about the Chelsea defender for his sublime piece of skill at the World Cup yesterday.

“Worth mentioning that the final pass for Richarlison, which was nothing short of sensational, was from Thiago Silva. It always helps when your centre-backs can make defence splitting passes like that!” McCoist said on ITV 1 (7:30pm, 5 December).

It’s no real surprise that the Blues centre-back can pull off eye-catching assists, considering he usually spends most games spraying passes out from the back.

National media in Brazil described him as “first class” for his assist against South Korea.

Silva’s career for club and country should already put him up there as one of the best centre-halves of the 21st century. If he captains Brazil to a World Cup success this winter, he should be mentioned alongside some of the game’s top ever defenders.

It’s truly remarkable that he continues to perform at such a high level well into his late-thirties.

He’s a modern ball-playing centre-back that has been operating at such heights for a long, long time.
