Ray Parlour has commented on Roman Abramovich’s era as Chelsea owner and the expectations of his predecessor.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Arsenal midfielder mentioned that the next landlords of Stamford Bridge will be required by supporters to spend like Abramovich.
A huge hole at the very summit of Chelsea’s hierarchy needs filling, following the decision of their pioneering leader to sell the rights to the mountain.
According to the Telegraph, billionaire duo Todd Boehly and Hansjorg Wyss, along with an unnamed third party, are leading the charge to take the club from Abramovich.
Fans first
Whilst wealth shall be replacing wealth, the manner in which these finances could be spent will mean a great deal to those who pay to watch the team week-in-week-out.
“The most important thing for from a fan’s point of view is that he picks an owner that is going to invest like he has and keep winning trophies,” said Parlour.
“You’ve seen other clubs where people have took it on and suddenly they don’t spend as much or they try and take money out of the club.
“One thing about Abramovich, he put the money to win trophies and what he did was unbelievable.
“So now, I think fans will hope he picks the best person to be successful for Chelsea.”
Remember all the good Abramovich has done
Although Abramovich’s life away from football remains questionable, nobody can doubt his commitment to changing Chelsea as a footballing entity.
He raised the Blues from the ground up, propelling them to the very extremes of the European elite.
His backing enabled the Londoners to win the Premier League five times, the Champions League twice and the domestic cups on a mere eight occasions.
The 55-year-old gave the thumbs up for some of Chelsea’s most significant transfers as well.
Didier Drogba, Petr Cech, Eden Hazard, Cesar Azpilicueta, Ashley Cole, N’Golo Kante, just to name a few.
Franco Di Santo, Juan Cuadrado, Ricardo Quaresma and Baba Rahman were not some of his finest acquisitions, but the good certainly outweighs the bad.
Demands of Abramovich’s successor will largely revolve around improving Thomas Tuchel’s squad once again.
Failure to do that and expect an angry mob to march down Fulham Road.
