Opinion: Thiago Silva could guide Chelsea players like Marcel Desailly once did

Despite the fact he’s aged 35, there should be real excitement around Chelsea completing the signing of Thiago Silva this summer and he could turn out to be such a valuable addition.

The Brazilian centre-back is clearly still capable of playing at the highest level and should immediately improve the team’s vulnerable defence, as he started in the Champions League final last month for Paris Saint-Germain.

Frank Lampard’s side have since managed to sign him on a free transfer and the impact he could have on other players in the squad is another reason why he’s such an attractive signing.

Antonio Rudiger is the most experienced of the Chelsea centre-backs, but the trio of Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen and Fikayo Tomori are certainly individuals that have such a big potential still to reach.

Silva, who has won 30 pieces of silverware during his international and club career, is exactly the type of senior figure that is going to really be able to help the Chelsea centre-backs.

There could certainly a comparison made to ex-Chelsea player Marcel Desailly, who arrived at Stamford Bridge a serial winner in 1998 just before his 30th birthday and was a colossus at the back.

Some Chelsea supporters will remember the French centre-back coming to English football later on his career and the centre-back was around when club legend John Terry burst onto the scene, who certainly would have taken major tips from him.

New Blues signing Silva can play a similar role to that in the upcoming campaign and it’s time for the club’s centre-back to pick his brain the best they can.
