Pat Nevin has suggested that Chelsea’s new signing Timo Werner could be “on fire” at the beginning of the season.
The 24-year-old striker is one of several new signings made this summer by the Blues and he’s perhaps the one that could really hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge.
He’s moved to the Premier League for the first time in his career after joining from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, where he scored 34 goals in 45 games across all competitions last season.
Werner linked up with Frank Lampard’s squad before the international break and looked promising with a goalscoring pre-season performance against Brighton, plus he’s impressed since going away with his country Germany.
The centre-forward played 180 minutes in Germany’s two games and was a real threat in attack, which included a fine goal in a 1-1 draw against Spain.
Ex-Blues player Nevin has singled out Werner as somebody to watch out for at the beginning of the season.
“It is hard not to be excited by Timo Werner for a kick off. He scores in his first outing for the Blues against Brighton and then follows it up with a superb striker’s goal for Germany against Spain. He could well start the season on fire,” Nevin told the club’s official website.
Despite the fact Chelsea have two quality options at striker in Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud already, it will be a surprise if new signing Werner isn’t given his competitive debut for the club away to Brighton next Monday in the club’s first game of the new league season.
He’s been bought to be the talisman in attack and understandably the expectations are extremely high on him to be a success, something he looks like he could enjoy.
Chelsea face Brighton, Liverpool, West Brom, Crystal Palace and Southampton in the opening five league matches of the season, which on paper seem like fixtures Werner can get off to a fast start in.
