Pat Nevin doesn’t think ‘limited’ 23-year-old Chelsea target is good enough to join a top club

Pat Nevin has suggested that AC Milan’s Rafael Leao isn’t good enough to join a top club amid transfer links to Chelsea.

Leao, 23, is a talented left-winger that plays a key role for his club side at the San Siro.

The Portuguese star has a very respectable attacking output so far this season, scoring nine goals and making nine assists in 30 games for the Italian giants.

He caught the eye last night as well during Milan’s 1-0 win over Tottenham in the Champions League.

Leao, who’s out of contract with Milan in 2024, is someone that’s been strongly linked with a potential move to Stamford Bridge in recent months.

Journalist Simon Phillips told GiveMeSport in December that Chelsea were in talks with Leao’s agent and were prepared to splash the cash for him.

However, journalist Gianluca Di Marzio now claims that the AC Milan winger doesn’t think Chelsea want him following their big spending in the January transfer window.

It remains to be seen if the Leao transfer rumours will reignite at a later date. In our view, it makes little sense to target him due to Mykhailo Mudryk’s January arrival from Shakthar Donetsk.

Rafael Leao doubter

BBC pundit Pat Nevin doesn’t actually think Leao is good enough for one of the elite clubs despite being “a special player”.

“Rafael Leao is a special player and he does special things. But that final return is much, much too limited for the top teams to consider him,” Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live.

First of all, Milan are a top side that are in the Champions League knockout phase on merit.

Leao definitely has a star quality about him whenever he’s on the ball, plus his end product is actually excellent when you judge him this season.

The fact he’s still only 23 means he’s definitely got the potential to reach the very top.
