Pat Nevin gives Chelsea warning ahead of Newcastle fixture

Pat Nevin is confident that Chelsea will beat Newcastle United in their first match after the international break, but has warned about players letting any negativity spill into the group based from the nation’s results.

With a large selection of the Blues squad away with their countries during the break, Nevin has suggested that some are going to return in a negative mood after some disappointing results on the international stage.

But the ex-Chelsea attacker is desperate for the squad to recapture the kind of form and momentum that existed going into the two-week break.

Frank Lampard’s side travel to Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League and know a victory will temporarily lift them to the top of the table.

“There have been ups and downs for everyone on their travels this time but I just hope they all get back with the same spirit and level of confidence they showed before this break. Internationals are supposed to lift you, but on the other hand losing while playing for your country can be a very particular type of downer,” Nevin told the club’s official website.

“We do not need any of that negativity before the trip to Newcastle and I am guessing there is enough experience in the group to get the feeling back to where it was very quickly. That is part of the job for Frank [Lampard] and Jody [Morris] this week. Newcastle will be no pushovers, but with the right attitude this is one we should win to keep the good run going.”

It’s a great point that Chelsea will almost need to start from fresh and try to build a new positive set of results when domestic football resumes.

They had won back-to-back games in the league against Burnley and Sheffield United, as well as winning two consecutive matches in the Champions League group stages as well.

With a league showdown with Tottenham just around the corner, it’s important Chelsea start strong against Newcastle and it does seem like the squad are gelling together nicely with a real positive mood within the camp.
