Pat Nevin points out what Chelsea desperately need to win vs Tottenham

Pat Nevin is hoping that Graham Potter’s Chelsea side will not be as unlucky as they have been in the past few weeks when they visit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

While Potter of course shoulders a lot of responsibility for Chelsea’s poor run, bad luck has undeniably played a part, too.

The Blues are on a five-game winless run, in which they managed to score just one goal, but this is hardly because they were outplayed by the opponents. They just could not capitalise on their chances.

Unlike Chelsea, their next opponent have plenty of reliable goalscorers.

But Nevin is confident that as long as Spurs’ defensive line do not perform miracles, Chelsea will have a chance to turn the dire situation around.

“They do have Harry Kane up front, as well as Son, Richarlison, and Kulusevski, but they are stretched at the back in comparison,” the former Blues winger wrote in his Chelsea column.

“It is a big ask, but I can’t see us going there and being anything other than ultra-positive in our approach.

“All I want now is for their keeper not to have a worldie, the defenders not to have a bunch of once-in-a-lifetime incredible goal-line clearances, the woodwork to get out of the way of our strikes, and for our luck to turn.

“That isn’t much to ask, is it? There is very little that can cheer up Chelsea fans more than a win at Spurs.”

Nevin also pointed out that Chelsea have had the joint-second-best defence in the league this season, having conceded just 23 goals in 23 matches.

There is very little to worry about in this department, especially with Thiago Silva expected to be back for the trip to north London.

It will all come down to whether the out-of-form Chelsea attack can finally produce.
