Pat Nevin thinks Wesley Fofana is on track to become a key player in the Chelsea team after watching his performance at the weekend.

Fofana, 22, returned to the Blues XI during Saturday’s home win against Leeds United.

Graham Potter’s side recorded a much-needed victory by beating Leeds 1-0 in the Premier League, which does give the group a small lift before tonight’s Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund.

Fofana scored the winner against Leeds with a fantastic header from a Ben Chilwell corner.

The centre-back’s eye-catching display earned him post-match praise from Potter, too.

Nevin suggests that Fofana will grow even more important for this Chelsea team over time.

Also, he likened the defender’s passing range to former Blues star David Luiz, who was an expert at long-range passes from back to front.

“It was a towering display by the young Frenchman and I don’t only mean with his goal,” Nevin told the club’s official website.

“There was a calm comfort on the ball, as well as great vision when passing out from the back or switching the play from one side to the other. Those arrowed cross-field balls are an important part of our game, as we seem to play against so many tightly packed defences. That particular pass stretches opponents, and you need someone who can play them accurately. He might not be a David Luiz quite yet in this area, but he looked the part and he will be ever-more important as time goes by.”

On top of his match-winning goal, Fofana delivered a really accomplished performance in the Blues defence against Leeds.

His ability on the ball is something Leicester City fans will know all about, but Chelsea supporters have seen very little of him since he joined last summer. Hopefully, Fofana’s poor luck with injuries is behind him.

He’s a ball-playing centre-back with great confidence in possession and he’s really positive with his passing selection.

It’s great to see he’s aggressive and enjoys the art of defending as well.

We can definitely see the Frenchman growing into a vital figure in this starting line-up.
