Paul Scholes has no sympathy for Chelsea because of ‘clear’ mistake they’ve made

Paul Scholes has very little sympathy for Chelsea after seeing Robert Sanchez’s mistake cost the Blues against Manchester United on the weekend.

After losing 2-1 away to Man Utd on Saturday, Chelsea can now reflect on their mixed start to the Premier League season.

It is quite obvious that Enzo Maresca’s side are still trying to get up to full speed, which may not be a surprise because of their busy summer.

Robert Sanchez must take a portion of the blame for the defeat to Man Utd due to his fifth-minute red card. The 27-year-old goalkeeper was sent off for fouling Bryan Mbeumo outside the box as he raced through on goal. With hindsight, he should have let the attacker score and kept 11 players on the pitch.

Joe Hart’s assessment of Sanchez is that the Chelsea gloveman lacks the vital consistency despite being extremely talented on his day.

Paul Scholes criticises Chelsea for not replacing Robert Sanchez

During a conversation on The Good, The Bad & The Football, former Man Utd stars Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt reacted to Sanchez’s red card at Old Trafford.

Butt said: “I don’t know what he’s thinking… I just think it’s madness what he’s done. Everyone has moments of madness, don’t get me wrong, but from that point on the game was over.”

Afterwards, Scholes pinned blame on Stamford Bridge officials for not replacing Sanchez in the summer. He said: “Chelsea get what they deserve, though. They needed a goalkeeper in the summer and didn’t get one. It was clear. A few clubs have done the same.”

Sanchez, who’s received a one-game ban, will hope to retain his role as the first-choice keeper at Chelsea over Filip Jorgensen. Does he still have a long-term future in West London, though?

The reality is that the Spanish shot-stopper now has quite a long list of high-profile errors he’s made in net for the Blues.

Chelsea opted to stick with Sanchez this summer as their starting goalkeeper despite links to AC Milan’s Mike Maignan and other alternatives. Unfortunately, his mistake at the weekend against Man Utd will only add fuel to the fire for supporters that are demanding he’s replaced.

Are Chelsea waiting for Mike Penders?

It is fascinating to observe that Chelsea already have a very talented young goalkeeper currently out on loan. Could on-loan Strasbourg star Mike Penders end up as the long-term number one at Stamford Bridge?

Chelsea-owned talent Penders, who’s aged just 20, looks like one of the most exciting young goalkeepers in Europe.

At the moment, the Belgian colossus is impressing at sister club Strasbourg in the French Ligue 1, where he’s made a strong start.

It was reported back in May that Chelsea rate Penders in a similar way to Estevao Willian, which should excite the Chelsea fanbase. Perhaps he could end up being the Sanchez replacement, but it would mean another season with the inconsistent Spaniard in goal.
