What could you buy for £1.5m?

A small yacht? A one-bedroom flat in London?

Romelu Lukaku’s left toenail? David Beckham’s Manchester United salary in 1999?

How about a striker bang in form?

Grabbing a Giroud bargain

Olivier Giroud left Chelsea last summer to join AC Milan for the relatively minimal fee of £1.5m (Goal).

In footballing circles, the cost was extremely, an unsurprising figure considering the Frenchman’s age and the fact he hardly played at all during Thomas Tuchel’s debut season at Stamford Bridge.

At the start of his San Siro career, it seemed Milan had actually paid over the odds for the 2018 World Cup winner.

Giroud scored on his second appearance for the Serie A side, but then missed a handful of games through illness and covid.

After returning, he grabbed a couple more goals, yet returned to the treatment room with a suspected hamstring injury.

At 35-year, some feared the centre-forward’s body might be working against him.

Form is temporary

However, the former Chelsea attacker has since proved that age is just a number and class is permanent.

Having failed to hit the back of the net between October and December, he went on a run of six goals in seven games.

This included Wednesday’s brace at home to Lazio in the Coppa Italia, a follow him to his double in the Milan derby.

In total, Giroud has ten goals this term, placing up only behind fellow veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Milan’s scoring charts.

He is also ahead of every single senior Chelsea player within Tuchel’s squad, including Lukaku, who actively replaced the France international at the club.

Whilst the Belgian continues to struggle, perhaps the Blues will be considering spending £1.5m to buy Giroud back.
