Micah Richards has now named the signing Chelsea need to make in order to become a top four contender in England again.

He told ‘The Rest is Football’ that the Blues have to sign a top striker in order to put the final touches on some promising patterns of play.

Chelsea are currently operating with Armando Broja and Nicolas Jackson as their two striking options, with the latter currently representing his country at the African Cup of Nations.

It seems as if the academy graduate has not taken his chance to impress in his absence, with reports stating that the Blues are open to his departure this month.

Richards has hinted that this is the position the Blues need to strengthen in order to become contenders at the top again.

He said: “I’m quite confused with Chelsea because I remember saying early doors that I had seen all the patterns of play, I had seen what they were trying to do and it looked like they had a clear plan but they just couldn’t get it across in the field.

Richards tells Chelsea to strengthen striker

“All the approach play has been excellent, it’s just that final bit. Now are we starting to see that final bit? Broja is still young but if they had a proper striker, all those games they were in, a proper striker scores that and I think we are talking about something different.

“It’s as easy as when Alan said if Man City get Haaland they will win everything. If Chelsea get that proper top striker, we are looking at a top four, top five, top six contender for me.”

Victor Osimhen has been frequently touted as the number one target for the club to come in and transform the position.

He will not be going anywhere this month though, after signing a new contract a few weeks ago that will keep him at Napoli for at least the rest of the season.
