Thomas Tuchel has been reported to want as many as three new centre-backs this season, as he looks to rebuild his backline following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

They have already added Kalidou Koulibaly to their ranks from Napoli, with the Senegal international ready beginning training with his new teammates.

Now, it appears they are turning back to Kounde for their next international-level reinforcement.

The club’s interest in the Frenchman has been well-documented over the past year, with the two parties almost coming to a deal as early as last summer.

However, Barcelona have begun to make their interest in the 23-year-old known, with AS reporting the Catalan side’s interest is something the Blues are looking to get ahead of with their bid.

The report also states that Sevilla are yet to respond to the offer, although it is believed Stamford Bridge is now his most likely destination for next season.

Kounde has become a progressive and composed centre-back over the last couple of years, with Spanish football expert Sid Lowe describing him as a ‘wonderful footballer’.

If Tuchel is looking to eventually shift to a four-back formation, the France international could prove the perfect pairing to Koulibaly, still allowing the attacking qualities of Reece James and Ben Chilwell to shine through.

However, if the usual three-back system is pursued with, the signing would provide the perfect option for right-centre-back, with his versatility and experience playing right-back a great trait for Tuchel to utilise.

With a left-sided player still likely needed, the club are weighing up a bid for PSG’s Presnel Kimpembe, while they also have promising Levi Colwill in their ranks ready to break through.
