Chelsea and Mason Mount have yet to reach an agreement over a contract extension, with several top Premier League clubs monitoring the situation, according to 90min.
The 24-year-old is one of the six players who are in the final 18 months of their contracts at Chelsea.
Mount’s being a regular starter and a key player under Graham Potter, however, means it is no surprise that the club reportedly consider extending his contract a priority.
90min claims that Chelsea co-owner and chairman Todd Boehly has been working on Mount’s potential extension since the summer, but while the communications remain open, the talks have proved difficult.
Mount, who is reportedly keen on staying, is said to be looking for a deal that reflects his status as a regular for both Chelsea and England.
This is quite understandable from the midfielder’s perspective, who was the club’s consecutive player of the season while being one of the lowest earners in the squad in the last two years.
Reece James, for example, signed a deal that makes him the highest-earning defender in the club’s history.
On the other hand, Chelsea seem to have started a new policy in terms of their wage structures, with the Evening Standard previously claiming that the January signings are on £70,000-a-week on average.
It remains unclear whether Mount would accept a similar deal.
A number of other clubs are said to be aware of the situation. According to 90min, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Newcastle United are “watching closely”.
