Buckle in ladies and gentlemen, we’ve got another Chelsea takeover storyline for you to feast on.

According to The Athletic, the Ricketts family are considering joining forces with a collection of investors in an attempt to buy Chelsea.

The Ricketts family have owned the Major League Baseball franchise, the Chicago Cubs, since 2009.

They previously looked into purchasing AC Milan back in 2018, meaning their desire to land a football club cannot be understated.

Cubs chairman, Tom Ricketts, is also a fan of the sport and once held an ownership stake in the now sinking ship that is Derby County.

An American dream

If the family are to move for the top Chelsea position, The Athletic claim they will do so with the powers of other wealthy partners.

Sky Sports reported that the Ricketts contingent might seek the financial help of Ken Griffin, founder and chief executive of Citadel Asset Management.

The Ricketts might be at an advantage over the other interested suitors, due to their working relationship with the Raine Group, the merchant bank in charge of Chelsea’s sale process.

Now the Cubs owners are seemingly in the race, it appears the successor to Roman Abramovich will be of American affiliation.

New York Jets proprietor Woody Johnson has been strongly linked to the Stamford Bridge vacancy.

Todd Boehly – a shareholder in the Los Angeles Dodgers – is also seemingly in the running.

Boehly and Swiss businessman Hansjorg Wyss are reportedly pulling their wealth together to make a bid.

Vivek Ranadive, the owner of the Sacramento Kings, is also apparently readying an offer.

Please do not change Chelsea

Clearly, a theme is running throughout the players who could takeover Abramovich’s empire.

They all have sporting assets in the USA.

However, the Premier League acts as an altogether ball game to the NBA, MLB or NFL.

It doesn’t rely on half-time shows or huge spectacles to rally up the fans.

Those wanting to acquire Chelsea might need to alter their ambitions in coordination with the league’s makeup.

After all, we’ve tried the whole cheerleaders before the game thing already…
