Five out-of-favour Chelsea players are currently among the club’s highest-earning members in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, according to The Telegraph.

The wage structure at Chelsea, the report claims, is likely going to be one of the first things that potential new club owners would want to address.

The likes of Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and on-loan Saul Niguez are reportedly among the highest earners at Chelsea.

Surprisingly, Edouard Mendy, Reece James, and Mason Mount, whom Tuchel have relied a lot on in the last year, sit at the other end of the scale, based on the report.

The Telegraph also added that Chelsea paid out £333 million in salaries in the financial year up to June last year and its sustainability remains unclear under expected new ownership.

Regardless, as Matt Law suggested in his piece, the wage structure will need to be re-balanced to reward performance rather than reputation and transfer fee.

Obviously, the club cannot just reduce some of these players’ salaries and the most viable option is perhaps to offload those high-earning players who do not play as much and offer better deals to those who do.

Werner, according to the report, is one of the players who could be made available this summer.

Although, as a consequence, Chelsea will likely also have to accept financial losses if they decide to sell the likes of Werner, Arrizabalaga, and even Lukaku.
