Reports have claimed that Graham Potter has assured Marc Cucurella that he trusts him at Chelsea.

According to The Athletic, the former Brighton manager has privately informed the 24-year-old that he still has full faith in him going forwards.

Potter is likely to be the person at Stamford Bridge who knows Cucurella the best.

The pair enjoyed a successful season together at Brighton last season, with the Spaniard picking up both player of the year awards at the end of the season.

This weekend saw far less happy times at the Amex stadium.

The Blues were humbled 4-1 by the Seagulls on Saturday, bringing an end to their unbeaten run under the new manager.

Cucurella in particular endured a rough afternoon, with him substituted after just over an hour.

In truth, he was not set up to succeed in the new-look left centre-back role, with Raheem Sterling not offering much cover from the wing-back role alongside him.

However, this was just another example of the Spain international coming into criticism since his high-profile move over the summer.

He was already under pressure to perform at Stamford Bridge, after being signed despite the Blues already having Ben Chilwell in the left wing-back position.

Fans will have ideally wanted other positions filling before bringing in competition to one of their stronger roles.

The deal may well have been done taking into account Chilwell’s injury last season, with him being injured around this time last year and him not returning until the final game of the campaign.

Cucurella may be one of the first team players offered a much-needed break when the Champions League tie against Dinamo Zagreb comes around on Wednesday.

The Blues are already confirmed as group winners, and should use the game as an opportunity to offer minutes to fringe players.
