Those considering buying Chelsea from Roman Abramovich might be met with a major problem concerning Stamford Bridge.

According to ESPN, the renovation of the iconic stadium is set to be placed on the shoulders of the next person to take over Abramovich’s London kingdom.

Is Roman running for the hills?

Abramovich is currently reaching out to lucrative names in the business world and beyond as he attempts to trade the club he acquired nearly two decades ago.

The 55-year-old could be hit by major sanctions due to his affiliations with Russian president Vladimir Putin, who has raged war on Ukraine.

Arguably Abramovich’s biggest asset is Chelsea, meaning if that becomes frozen, he will not be able to sell or pump money into his long-term project.

Hence why he has reportedly been making numerous phone calls to people potentially interested in taking the heavy burden from his hands.

Hansjorg Wyss, a Swiss businessman, revealed that Abramovich had already offered the keys to Chelsea’s front gates.

The Telegraph claim the price on the table stands at £4 billion, although Chelsea’s owner may receive proposals around the £2 billion mark.

Stand off over Stamford Bridge

Whoever does acquire the rights to the Champions League holders, they will be left with the issue surrounding Stamford Bridge.

Abramovich rejected plans to redecorate the ground in 2018, at around the time his UK investor visa expired.

The original blue prints had involved splashing £1 billion (Telegraph) to knock down the original structure and add another 20,000 seats to the 41,800-capacity venue.

Yet, the site’s freehold is owned by Chelsea Pitch owners, meaning the lot would not be included in the sale of the organisation, adding another layer of confusion to the situation.

If anyone can unbundle this mess, it would be much appreciated!
