Chelsea are reportedly close to agreeing terms with Reece James over a new contract. The right-back has impressed for the Blues this season and looks like he may be making the right-back spot his own.

The Telegraph has reported that the 20-year-old, who has two years left on his current deal, is keen to commit his long term future to the club. Following a hugely successful loan move to Wigan last season, several clubs were targeting James on loan this season. However, Lampard wanted him with the first-team.

Since recovering from an ankle injury, the Englishman has made 10 starts for the Blues and impressed every time. He has scored two goals and provided one assist, but could have had a lot more.

His crossing in Sunday’s FA Cup game against Nottingham Forest was a joy to behold. If Michy Batshuayi had his shooting boots on, James could have ended the day with multiple assists.

The new contract would reportedly be a five-year deal and talks between the two parties are progressing well. Chelsea will no doubt want to avoid another Callum Hudson-Odoi situation, where other clubs begin to sniff around.

James is a serious talent and is considered by some people as the best young player Chelsea currently have in their roster. He has the attributes of a complete full-back and can make an impact at both ends of the pitch. Securing him for the future would be a huge step for Lampard and this Chelsea team.
