Report: Some of Chelsea’s owners were really not convinced about signing £13m player

Reports have claimed that Todd Boehly was not convinced by the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Chelsea last summer.

According to The Athletic, the American didn’t see the striker fitting in alongside his project in terms of wage demands and age.

Aubameyang’s fortunes have only gotten worse as this season has progressed.

He scored three goals early into his Chelsea career, netting twice in big Champions League games against AC Milan.

However, fast forward to today and he is unavailable to take part in the Round of 16 tie with Borussia Dortmund after being left out of the knockout squad by Graham Potter.

Enzo Fernandez, Joao Felix and Mykhailo Mudryk were all added to the squad after their January transfers, and the number coming in meant one of the original members were forced to be left out.

Aubameyang not wanted by Boehly

The former Arsenal and Barcelona striker was strongly linked with a move away from the club just months after joining, with the MLS presenting an opportunity for him to be able to play for another club in the coming months.

It does feel as if the ownership are pushing for his exit to be sooner rather than later, and this perhaps stems from The Athletic’s report that they were not convinced by bringing him in in the first place.

It was not difficult to see that the signing far more suited what Thomas Tuchel was looking for, off the back of the pair working together in the past.

Nevertheless, they still spent £12m on bringing him in in an attempt to bring goals back to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are still waiting for the goals to come from any source recently, although they will be hopeful that the January contingent can help sort that issue.
