Tammy Abraham has reportedly activated a one-year extension clause in his contract but Chelsea are still keen on sealing a new long-term contract.
The 22-year-old ended his 10-game goal drought by scoring the winning goal against Crystal Palace on Tuesday.
He missed four months of action during the drought, both from injury and due to the lockdown period, and he is yet to regain his sharpness judging by his recent performances.
The England international is still Chelsea’s leading goal-scorer with 16 goals in 40 appearances and, according to a report from the Telegraph, the Blues want to reward the striker with a new contract.
His current contract, signed in 2017, initially ran to 2022. The Telegraph’s report revealed that he activated a one-year extension clause by reaching a set number of games and goals, which means his contract now runs until 2023.
The extension clause also increased Tammy’s previous £50,000-a-week deal, the report added, although his current salary was not mentioned.
The extra year in Tammy’s contract explains why both he and Chelsea are taking their time to negotiate a new deal, which reportedly will include a big pay rise.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard told the media today (as quoted by Goal’s Nizaar Kinsella): ” I don’t want to get into contract clauses, that could open me up, but there’s plenty of time.
Interestingly, contrary to some reports, the report said Tammy has not made any demands to be paid the same as teammate Callum Hudson-Odoi who reportedly earns around £120,000-a-week.
Timo Werner’s transfer has not impacted Chelsea’s stance over Tammy, the report added.
While previously, Tammy spoke about his desire to play alongside Werner, rather than just competing for a spot in the team.
