Chelsea have added Niklas Sule onto their shortlist of centre-backs they would like to sign in the summer, according to BILD.

The Bayern Munich defender joins Dayot Upamencano and David Alaba as potential transfer targets for Thomas Tuchel.

Sule has been with the Bundesliga champions since 2017 and was part of their treble winning side last season.

His contract at Bayern expires this June and Chelsea may well move in for the 25-year-old if they miss out on Upamencano and Alaba.

This is not the first time Chelsea have shown interest in the German international. BILD reported back in 2016 that the Blues were beaten by Bayern for Sule’s signature.

He has played 12 times this season but has often been deployed out of position at right-back.

Holstein Kiel forward Jae-Sung Lee once described playing against Sule was like ‘playing against a wall’ (Goal).

The Chronicle view

This will certainly fit Chelsea’s remit of wanting a ‘commanding centre-half’ (Telegraph) to take the reins in Tuchel’s backline.

Plenty has been made about the Blues manager being able to use his German influence in securing or reshaping players. Chelsea will hope he can do the same with Sule.
