Romelu Lukaku had reportedly been in contact with Inter Milan players throughout the season as he pushed for a move back to the San Siro.

According to the Athletic, the Belgian had been informing former teammates about his desire to return to the Nerazzurri while still playing for the Blues last season.

The 29-year-old’s return to Stamford Bridge was supposed to be the missing piece of the Chelsea puzzle, with the club’s top league scorer the prior season being Jorginho from the penalty spot.

After a promising start, Lukaku’s form quickly dropped off, finishing the season on just eight league goals.

His relationship with Chelsea fans fell off a cliff at the turn of the year, after an explosive interview with Sky Italy saw him announce his desire to return to Inter.

Now, The Athletic report that he was also privately working on his future move, as he got in contact with former teammates at the club.

They claim he was letting them know about his desire to return to the club, while telling those rumoured to move away to remain at the club in an attempt to bring back the good times of the 2020/21 season.

These developments will no doubt anger Blues fans, with many feeling they gave him a fair chance despite his media antics and lacklustre performances on the pitch.

Ending the relationship appears to be the best move for everyone involved, giving Thomas Tuchel another opportunity to find an attacking force which can challenge that of Manchester City and Liverpool.

A desire amongst the supporter for a player to be 100% committed to the club may put any potential Raphinha deal off to a bad start, with rumours long suggesting his preferred destination is Barcelona, despite the Blues agreeing a fee with Leeds United.
