Chelsea could officially have new owners in the next four to six weeks.

This potentially exciting update was delivered by The Athletic, who provided a timeframe of when the sale of the club might be concluded.

The chain of events

Although just over a month feels like a long time, supporters will know things move extremely quickly in football.

In February, Cesar Azpilicueta was holding the Club World Cup trophy in Abu Dhabi.

Fast forward 14 days and the unravelling began.

Roman Abramovich offered his ownership of the company to a board of trustees, before eventually putting the Blues on the market for sale.

Almost in the blink of an eye, the UK government sanctioned the Russian, freezing his assets and therefore shrouding the future of Chelsea in serious uncertainty.

Now, those planning on buying the London entity have around 48 hours left to submit their bids before the deadline closes.

Who could be the new Chelsea owner?

Groups and consortiums from America, Saudi Arabia and Britain are all seemingly in the queue to acquire Abramovich’s fallen empire.

Some will certainly appease the fans more than others.

Nick Candy, for example, is a follower of the team himself and attended Sunday’s Premier League game against Newcastle United.

On the other hand, Jonathan Goldstein, part of the Todd Boehly-Hansjorg Wyss consortium, apparently follows Tottenham Hotspur.

Although the Blue community might shudder at being owned by anyone associated with Spurs, they cannot really be picky at this point.

Especially as it’s been widely reported that Goldstein and his two billionaire colleagues are in the best position to purchase Chelsea.

The government, the Premier League and the Raine Group will certainly mull over and scrutinise each of the options intensely.

No stone can be left unturned in the search for the person or people to replace Abramovich.

Chelsea cannot afford, quite literally, to undergo another situation like this again.
