Rio Ferdinand has claimed that there is a reason why Manchester United fans are not going crazy over signing Mason Mount from Chelsea.

He claimed on ‘Five’ that supporters are far more concerned with the club signing a regular goalscorer as part of their summer spree.

It is expected that the England international will be announced a new United player any moment now.

Mount made it clear that he was looking to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, following a complete breakdown in relationship between himself and the ownership.

He rejected contract offers from the club, who also were uncertain about what they wanted to offer the player to fit in line with their new policies.

This saw multiple big sides jump at the chance to bring him in, with Erik ten Hag leading United’s interest in a deal.

Ferdinand explains Mount fan reaction

He sees the England international as a player that can play a key role in his side, even if a large portion of the United fanbase are perhaps not as convinced.

Other than signing an academy graduate from a rival side, there has not been a great deal of optimism surrounding the deal.

However, Ferdinand has claimed this is only because supporters are more keen to see a striker come through the door.

He said: “The reason why Man United fans aren’t going crazy for Mason Mount is because they all know the priority in this window is a number nine, that’s the only reason.”

United have been linked to a number of attacking targets, with nearly all of them also reportedly of interest of Chelsea.

The main one perhaps is Victor Osimhen from Napoli, although a deal to sign him will see either side smash their previous transfer record.
