Rio Ferdinand didn’t hold back in showing admiration towards Edouard Mendy following Chelsea’s 2-0 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid yesterday, speaking on BT Sport.

It was a glorious European evening for the Blues, who strolled into the quarter finals passed a mediocre Madrid outfit.

Thomas Tuchel’s team were dominate from minute one to minute 90 and never looked like squandering their advantage.

Rare goals from Hakim Ziyech and Emerson Palmieri ensured the victory and another game undefeated.

It also meant that Mendy would earn his eighth clean sheet under Tuchel and the 20th overall for Chelsea.

Most of the plaudits rightly went to those in front of him for their terrific effort in completely muting Madrid.

However, Ferdinand saved a special mention for Chelsea’s goalkeeper after the match.

“I think Mendy is going to be a tremendous addition to this squad,” said the former Manchester United defender.

“He’s already been that, but I also think he will be for a long time.”

Ever since taking over from Kepa Arrizabalaga as the Blues no.1 last October, Mendy has rarely put a foot or glove wrong.

The 29-year-old’s general presence oozes calm into the defence, which then resonates throughout the whole side.

He is also no stranger to pulling off important saves, which perhaps goes under the radar because he’s rarely called into action.

But it’s certainly not going unnoticed anymore.
