Chelsea earned the sympathy of several Manchester City supporters on social media following the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Their compassion was mainly aimed towards Edouard Mendy, who was nominated for the Yashin award, a prize solely handed out to goalkeepers.
Ahead of the announcement, it seemed a near certainty that the Senegalese international would collect the accolade.

After all, few ‘keepers in the world can boast a similar defensive record to the 29-year-old since he joined Chelsea in September.
A Champions League winner, with a joint-record nine clean sheets in his debut campaign, plus the current UEFA Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year; surely the Yashin honour was heading back to Stamford Bridge.
Not to be for Mendy
Unfortunately, Mendy missed out on top spot, pipped to the post by Paris Saint-Germain’s young goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Donnarumma helped Italy to European Championship glory over the summer, earning the Player of the Tournament title for his efforts.
However, his victory last night was met with wide disapproval from all corners of the sport.

The general consensus across the board was that Mendy should’ve been the winner.
Manchester City fans were one of the numerous club followers that felt the Chelsea number one’s pain.
Here’s how they reacted to the news on Twitter:
Take two for Edo
Followers of the Premier League champions were certainly gracious in defeat, considering one of their own had been put up for the Yashin trophy.
Ederson finished fourth in the rankings, behind Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, Mendy and Donnarumma.
At least the Chelsea shot-stopper will have another two cracks at the whip before February.
He has been nominated for FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year and Globe Soccer’s equivalent award.
We are rooting for you, Edo!
