Rory Delap was recently asked about son Liam Delap following the Chelsea striker’s hamstring injury.

Delap sustained it during Chelsea‘s 2-0 win against Fulham just before the international break and will be out of action for a while.

In the build-up to the Blues’ draw with Brentford last weekend, Enzo Maresca confirmed that Delap could be out for 12 weeks.

It has left the Chelsea head coach with just Joao Pedro and Marc Guiu for the centre-forward position.

Liam Delap ‘gutted’ after hamstring injury

Delap only moved to Chelsea in June and the Premier League season has just started. Understandably, the 22-year-old is not happy right now, with his father confirming that.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Delap senior said: “I think he’s gutted obviously with the injury, especially at the start of his career there. But it’s part and parcel of the game. He’s got a strong head on him and he’s focused on the recovery now.”

Despite this injury, Delap has still had something to smile about at Chelsea. In July, he was able to help the Blues win the Club World Cup in the US.

The Englishman scored one goal in the tournament and came close to grabbing another in the final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Following Delap’s injury, Chelsea did think about signing Emanuel Emegha from Strasbourg in the last transfer window.

However, the Dutchman will not be joining the Blues until 2026, meaning that Maresca will have to rely on Pedro and Guiu until Delap is back.

Liam Delap’s secret skill

A video of Delap being a bit of a mathematical genius recently emerged, and Rory has shared the story of how he found out about his skill with numbers.

“It’s weird, he’s always had it,” the former Stoke City midfielder told talkSPORT. “We were on holiday once and around a table, he started doing sums and times tables. He was doing the calculations quicker than we could do it on the calculator on the phone.”

Hopefully, at the end of the season, Delap is adding up all of the goals he scored in a successful campaign for Chelsea.

Last term, the England Under-21 international netted 12 times in 37 Premier League appearances for Ipswich Town. He is certainly capable of finding the back of the net; Maresca just needs him to return to full fitness and then give the former Ipswich and Manchester City player time to adapt at Stamford Bridge.
