Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has admitted that he had already made contact with Thomas Tuchel during the manager’s time at Paris Saint-Germain.
Tuchel’s arrival has been a blessing to the 27-year-old centre-back who has now reclaimed a regular spot at Chelsea.
It is clear how important Rudiger is for Tuchel’s plans, as he has played full 90 minutes in each of the four games under the new manager so far.
Aside from the unfortunate own goal in the 2-1 win over Sheffield United on Sunday, Rudiger has arguably been solid in a back three.
It is certainly not a coincidence that Rudiger has suddenly become one of the first names on the team sheet, however.
Apparently, Tuchel had already had an eye on the defender before he was appointed to succeed Frank Lampard.

“He [Tuchel] wanted to bring me to Paris in the summer,” the Germany international told Sky Germany.
“But otherwise there has been no contact so far. I’ve only ever played against him. So we didn’t know each other before.”

Rudiger refused to compare Lampard and Tuchel and said “every manager is unique”, but he believes the players have enjoyed playing under the new boss.
“The most important impression he has left is: he knows what he wants,” Rudiger explained.
“He has his way of playing football, which is positive for many players. This is also reflected in the latest results.
“This is a good positive start for him.”
