Some Chelsea staff would much rather Robert Sanchez start in goal over Kepa Arrizabalaga this season.

That is according to a report from The Athletic.

They claim that some people within Chelsea hope that Robert Sanchez edges out Kepa Arrizabalaga in the fight to become the first-choice goalkeeper.

In fairness, there’s transfer speculation in the media that one of them may exit Stamford Bridge before the summer window closes.

Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino described Kepa as a “fantastic keeper” during this summer’s pre-season, as quoted by Ben Jacobs’ Twitter. However, the 28-year-old gloveman is now tipped for a transfer exit after five years in west London.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg reported on Twitter yesterday that Bayern Munich are currently working on a deal to sign Kepa on loan with an option to buy.

Kepa finished last season with possession of the starting role in-between Chelsea’s goal. Also, Edouard Mendy departed the club earlier in the transfer window to strengthen his position.

It sounds like there could be a new option in the Blues goal very soon, though.

Signed for £25million (Sky Sports) from Brighton this summer, Sanchez has arrived at the Bridge to compete for the goalkeeper position.

It sounds like he’s got the support of some within the Chelsea camp, plus the role may soon be left wide open if Kepa does move on this month.

Sanchez has proven in Brighton colours he’s performing to a very high standard at Premier League level, so we think he could be the fresh change in goal that this side needs after so much debate in recent years.
