Graeme Souness believes Mason Mount would get into any team in the Premier League after the midfielder’s brilliant performance in Chelsea’s win over Sheffield United.

The comfortable 4-1 win against Chris Wilder’s men on Saturday was the Blues’ fourth consecutive wins in all competitions and Mount certainly played an important role in midfield.

There were moments at the start of the season when the 21-year-old looked struggled to fit into Frank Lampard’s new 4-2-3-1 system. But, since the switch to the 4-3-3, Mount has looked irreplaceable.

Souness even argued that Mount should be a guaranteed starter at Chelsea.

He told Sky Sports (via the Metro): “Because he’s homegrown they’re overlooked and taking them for granted. Mason Mount is a fabulous player.

“I think he’d be the first name on my team sheet in midfield. We talked about Ziyech but the challenge for him is to see if he can do it against the best teams.

“We know Mason Mount can, we know he’s right up for the cup.”

Former Blues star Ashley Cole pointed out that some Chelsea fans were unhappy with Mount, but Souness defended the England international and suggested that a player like him would be needed by any team.

“He’s a baby, I’m trying to think what team he wouldn’t get in in the Premier League and that includes all the big guys,” he added.

Given Lampard’s lack of options in the No.8 role, after Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s loan exits in the summer, Mount will likely be in the line-up week in, week out.

Fortunately for the Blues, as he proved last season, Mount is capable of playing over 50 games a season.
