‘Step it up’… TalkSPORT pundit says 22-year-old Chelsea player needs to have more impact

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez really needs to step up his game.

That is according to talkSPORT pundit Scott Minto.

Enzo Fernandez, who’s a mainstay in the Chelsea line-up, is coming in for a bit of criticism lately for his individual form.

The 22-year-old Argentine star was excellent for the Blues last season after joining in January, but it does feel like he’s still trying to find top gear in this 2023/24 campaign.

Speaking via ESPN last week, Julien Laurens explained how Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino isn’t getting the best out of Fernandez.

Chelsea pressure

Scott Minto explains how he’s actually quite a big admirer of Fernandez as a footballer. However, he wants to see a lot more from the World Cup winner in a Chelsea shirt.

Speaking via talkSPORT’s Premier League All Access podcast, Minto said: “I think Fernandez is a really good player, he’s technically brilliant. I think if he were to come into an already slick side, say a City or even an Arsenal or Liverpool, the numbers would be a lot better. I think at times last season he was carrying the team. His numbers aren’t good, and he needs to step it up as much as possible, but we’ve been saying that for the past 18 months about Chelsea haven’t we?”

When you consider Fernandez cost £106.8million (Sky Sports) to sign from Benfica, you can understand why the expectation is high.

Enzo Fernandez can do more

We somewhat agree that Fernandez can have a greater impact on the XI.

The all-action midfielder can do a bit of everything from the centre of the park, so when he’s fit and firing he’s a standout individual.

However, the South American ace desperately needs to find consistency and a way to impact every match.

It’s obvious that the new midfield combination at Stamford Bridge is still gelling together. We’re often seeing a trio of Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Conor Gallagher trying to click.
