Darren Bent has delivered a worrying verdict when assessing the recent form of Chelsea and England star Mason Mount.
Mount, 23, remains an ever-present when it comes to both club and country.
The attacking midfielder’s delivering significant contributions this season, scoring eight goals and making 12 assists in 43 Chelsea appearances so far across all competitions.
However, the academy graduate is perhaps a little inconsistent with his individual form compared to last year.
TalkSPORT pundit Bent has suggested Mount’s currently doing a lot of running and hard work, but there’s not been too much else to go with it. In addition, he reckons his spot in England’s best starting XI is now under threat, too.
“I feel like, at the minute, it’s a lot of huff and puff, but not really a lot more going on,” Bent told talkSPORT.
“When you start looking for England, at one stage he was a nailed-on starter for Gareth [Southgate]. I don’t think that’s the case anymore.”
Chelsea need peak Mount
In fairness, Mount’s levels have perhaps dropped off a little recently. You could say that about many of the team’s key players, though.
He was tormenting opposition teams back in December when he hit a real purple patch of form, which included scoring in four consecutive Premier League games during the winter month.
The next three matches are defining in Chelsea’s season and players like Mount need to be at their best.
First of all, there’s a Premier League game tomorrow against Southampton and they need a result to consolidate third in the table.
Afterwards, there’s a Champions League quarter-final second leg away to Real Madrid and a 3-1 scoreline to overturn.
Finally, next weekend they have a trip to Wembley Stadium to face Crystal Palace in an FA Cup semi-final.
