Andy Townsend is urging Chelsea to keep Mason Mount at Stamford Bridge next season.

With Mason Mount’s contract expiring in 2024, there is a lot of speculation flying around regarding his future.

Well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano recently claimed on his YouTube channel that Chelsea are making no progress during contract talks with Mount.

The 24-year-old has been with the Blues since such a young age and has grown into a key first-team player.

However, does the attacking midfielder’s future now lie away from West London?

TalkSPORT pundit Townsend thinks Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly needs to go all out and keep Mount at the club.

“I think Mason Mount is a terrific player. He is unlucky, right now, with that contract up and just approaching a year out. He has had a little bit of a dip, yes. He is going to have to admit that,” Townsend told talkSPORT (21/03/23 at 5:55 pm).

“But is he an asset? Yes. Should he stay at Chelsea? 100%. Do I still see him being part of a successful and winning Chelsea team? Yes, I do. They will be crazy to sell him. He is worth an awful lot more. £280k-a-week, that’s a bog standard and a bang-average Premier League player is probably getting that.

“If he is thinking ‘you know what, I am not liking the vibe I am getting’, whether the contract talks have hit the buffers and he can’t move them on any further. The only place he would want to go (is Liverpool). He would work for [Jurgen] Klopp.”

Incidentally, Paul Merson agrees that Chelsea are making a big error if they allow Mount to exit.

Chelsea may only truly recognise how important Mount is when he’s gone.

Many hope it doesn’t come to that, though.

He’s been a real talisman in the Blues line-up during recent years, so a dip this season certainly isn’t enough to write him off.

The creative playmaker is still one of the most talented individuals in the squad at Stamford Bridge, who’s still only 24.

We don’t want to go through the pain of watching him go and thrive at a Premier League rival, so let’s hope all parties can reach a solution during the contract negotiations.
