Tammy Abraham says Werner deserves praises despite poor goalscoring form at Chelsea

Tammy Abraham has praised Chelsea teammate Timo Werner for his hard work despite his underwhelming goalscoring form at the moment.

Playing in his favourite deep-lying forward role against a Championship side, it was an ideal opportunity for Werner to build his confidence and start scoring again.

But it was just not his day even after tirelessly making runs which led to several good chances. Even his penalty was saved.

The 24-year-old has now had just one goal from the last 16 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, with his only goal came against League Two side Morecambe.

Abraham, who clearly had a better day in front of the goal after scoring a hat-trick, had a few positive words to say about his striking partner after the game.

“I give credit to Timo, he works hard, he works his socks off,” he told beIN Sports.

“Even when things are not going his way, you still see him trying.

“Today he lifted me and I lifted him when we’re out there together.

“I was obviously upset when he missed the penalty, you could hear me screaming on the bench, ‘Take it, take it!’

“Times like these happen, you just need that goal to come off any part of your body for the luck to turn around.”

While Werner’s lack of goals is certainly a big concern, it was still interesting to see him operate behind another striker.

His runs caused a lot of trouble for Luton defenders and played a big part in the build-up to the first goal.

As Abraham pointed out, Werner clearly has the determination, and if he keeps making those runs, the goals will eventually come.
