The shocking and saddening, but not surprising news, that Chelsea will sack Frank Lampard has sent the footballing world into a frenzy.

Matt Law of the Telegraph broke the development less than 24-hours after Chelsea had beaten Luton Town in the FA Cup.

It now leaves the Blues squad in a vortex of speculation. Who will the new manager preference? Do they have a future at Stamford Bridge? Have they been offered a lifeline?

A large proportion of his players will be deeply upset by his withdrawal, especially those from the academy he gave an opportunity to where others might not have.

However, there may be a small contingent who are silently rejoicing that Lampard will be leaving Stamford Bridge.

Marcos Alonso might be the one leading this mini-rebellion. He has only made three appearances all season as Lampard desperately tried to offload him elsewhere.

The £45m (BBC Sport) signing of Ben Chilwell was a signal of Alonso’s status at Chelsea, even dropping below Emerson in the left-back pecking order.

With Lampard vacant, the 30-year-old could be reinstated by his new coach rather than being completely overlooked. His vast experience and title winning credentials would be a welcoming prospect to any new arrival in the dugout.

Ross Barkley will be keeping a close eye on the developments of his parent club. Currently, on-loan at Aston Villa, the England international was sent away by Lampard as he attempted to re-shape his midfield.

He may have regretted this decision as the 27-year-old has impressed at Villa park, whilst Chelsea’s midriff has looked highly unbalanced at times. A return to London will certainly be on the forefront Barkley’s mind.

Jorginho has been a part of this dysfunctional midfield dilemma and has slowly started to miss out at the expensive of his younger comrades.

But with Lampard out of the picture, the Italian could be redeployed as the main man in the middle.

Maurizio Sarri had no issue building his side around Jorginho and another manager of similar ilk may do the same.
