In a whirlwind 24 hours, Marc Cucurella is now officially a Real Madrid player after completing a shock move to the Spanish giants from Chelsea. Jose Mourinho has secured the Spain defender.

News of Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid emerged from Fabrizio Romano on Sunday evening, with the defender and Chelsea both agreeing a move for the left-back. Then, all the details began to emerge.

Marc Cucurella is set to join Real Madrid! What’s a fair price? 💸

Mourinho raids Chelsea!

A fee of £47.5m will be paid straight into Chelsea’s coffers, while £4.3m will be paid in add-ons. Cucurella has signed a five-year deal with the option of another year, keeping him at the Bernabeu until June 2032.

It sees Mourinho add Cucurella to the signings of Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate and Bernardo Silva, the latter two arriving on free transfers. But how many times has Mourinho raided his old club, Chelsea?

The five players Jose Mourinho has now signed from Chelsea

Ricardo Carvalho > Real Madrid (2010)

It would take Mourinho three years to finally sign a player from Chelsea after his exit in 2007, following his first stint as manager at Stamford Bridge. Indeed, he would sign a player he had signed for Chelsea.

Carvalho joined Chelsea after winning the Champions League under Mourinho at Porto, and when the Special One came calling again, he jumped at the chance for a third spell. Madrid paid Chelsea £6.7m.

Michael Essien > Real Madrid (2012)

Two years later, Mourinho raided Chelsea for a second time. This time, it was another signing he made while in charge at Chelsea, in midfielder Michael Essien. The Ghanaian legend joined Madrid on loan.

Essien played 35 times for Madrid before returning to Chelsea for one more season. He would end his nine-year stint on the books at Chelsea in the summer of 2014, before completing a move to AC Milan.

Nemanja Matic > Man United (2017)

Mourinho raided Benfica to bring Matic back to Chelsea in 2014, where he remained for three years before Mourinho signed Matic for a second time. The Serbian joined Mourinho’s Man United in 2017.

It was a blockbuster £40m move, and Matic would remain at Old Trafford for five seasons, playing 189 times. Matic is still playing now, joining Roma under Mourinho. Now, he’s with Italian side Sassuolo.

Tammy Abraham > Roma (2021)

Before the signing of Cucurella, Mourinho raided Chelsea again to sign England striker Tammy Abraham. A deal was agreed in the region of £34m, with Chelsea boasting a buyback clause worth double that.

He would score 27 goals in his first season and win the Conference League. But the England striker has struggled beyond that, since playing for Milan, Besiktas and now Europa League winners Aston Villa.

Who would you rather see at left-back next season, Jorrel Hato or Lewis Hall?

Marc Cucurella > Real Madrid (2026)

Now, the fifth instalment of Mourinho’s Chelsea raids. Cucurella will join a star-studded Real Madrid squad being built to claw back the La Liga title, after Barcelona asserted their dominance once again.

Cucurella joins a new squad including Silva, Dumfries and Konate. A new-look defence boasting players in their prime, which is typical of Mourinho. Cucurella is in action for the first time since his move tonight.
