The hidden side of Reece James’ capataincy that Chelsea fans don’t see

Chelsea insiders have lifted the lid on Reece James’ dressing room authority, revealing how the captain commands absolute respect across all levels of the club.

Reece James was appointed Chelsea captain by Mauricio Pochettino in 2023, following the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta. As a cherished academy graduate who embodies the club’s identity, the decision was a natural passing of the torch.

However, James’ captaincy has been heavily disrupted by hamstring injuries, forcing him to spend extensive periods on the treatment table.

As well as this, his introverted nature has led critics to question his leadership credentials. Enzo Maresca publicly demanded more personality from James, openly stating he expected more vocal command and hinting that the dressing room lacked a proper leader.

Detractors argue James is too quiet and lacks the aggressive, iron-willed temperament needed to navigate a crisis.

Yet, behind the scenes, it seems to be a different story for James.

What role would make sense for John Terry at Chelsea? Or is he getting ahead of himself?😬

Reece James takes the lead behind the scenes at Chelsea

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea insiders say Reece James is a vocal presence, who is listened to by all levels of staff and players.

He is capable of keeping team-mates in check if they are late or need reminding of their responsibilities and helps to run the player fine system with the rest of the leadership group.

Joao Pedro has already spoken about the Reece James captaincy secret, praising his influence and leadership qualities.

“His mentality. He never gives up. Never. And also, he gives the confidence to everyone.

“Like with me, if I don’t score one game, he comes to me and says, ‘Joao, bro, you need to score. Hey, next game, make sure you score.’ I say, ‘Okay, okay.’”

Reece James needs some help at Chelsea

While Reece James commands immense respect behind the scenes, Chelsea’s young squad urgently requires a broader ecosystem of leadership around their captain.

Relying solely on a reserved, home-grown figurehead has its risks, especially given James’ past fitness battles.

Chelsea must surround him with battle-hardened, experienced players who possess a contrasting, vocal profile, especially now Marc Cucurella has left. Someone willing to demand accountability on the pitch and absorb pressure in the dressing room.
