For a while now, Chelsea have been in talks with Man City regarding compensation for manager Enzo Maresca, and now, it has been confirmed how much Chelsea will receive.

Maresca resigned from his position as Chelsea manager back on January 1 this year, after increasing pressure on his shoulders. The boss had become frustrated with his inability to run things in his own way.

Chelsea paid a figure in the region of £4m to Maresca, a lot less than they might have done had they sacked Maresca. Chelsea’s season unravelled following Maresca’s exit, with Liam Rosenior struggling.

While Man City are yet to confirm the appointment of Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s replacement, it is a badly kept secret that the former Chelsea manager will replace Pep. Now, a deal has been agreed.

Chelsea agree compensation fee with Man City for Maresca

Already this summer, Chelsea have raked in £56m from the sales of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Jimmy-Jay Morgan to West Brom. Now, they’re set to receive a fee that takes the total above £70m.

According to Sky Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio, talks have now been concluded, and a compensation fee has been agreed. A deal will see Chelsea receive £17m for Maresca’s hire, with Man City set to pay up.

“Verbal agreement done between clubs, Maresca and Chelsea for contract termination. In the next hours the manager will travel to Manchester and sign a 3-year contract. Deal between clubs of 20M euros.”

City are now set to finally appoint Maresca as manager, with the final obstacle overcome. It is believed the former Leicester and Parma boss will sign a contract at The Etihad until the summer of 2029.

Why Chelsea are entitled to compensation from Man City

There have been a few reasons given for this. Some said it was because Maresca resigned and he was not sacked, with many years left on his previous Chelsea deal. But The Guardian have reported differently.

They claim that it is because City approached Maresca during the winter period before his resignation, suggesting that his resignation came about because Maresca knew he would get the Man City job.

Therefore, Chelsea felt they were entitled to compensation. They are now set to receive a tidy sum from City for Maresca, with the Italian agreeing to become City manager and replace Pep in the hotseat.
