‘The key areas’: Cesar Azpilicueta says where Chelsea must be much better after Saturday’s 2-2 draw

Cesar Azpilicueta stresses that Chelsea must be much better when it comes to attacking and defending in the two penalty boxes.

It was another underwhelming result for the Blues on Saturday afternoon, surrendering a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have found it difficult in home games at Stamford Bridge this season, so throwing away their advantage against Wolves won’t surprise some frustrated fans.

Romelu Lukaku, who put in a “good performance” on the weekend, scored twice to put the hosts in control.

First of all, the number nine scored a penalty that he won. Just two minutes later he doubled his and his team’s tally with a sublime right-footed finish from distance.

Unfortunately, Trincao and Conor Coady scored late on to earn the visitors a league point.

32-year-old defender Azpilicueta, who was substituted off before Coady’s stoppage time equaliser, delivered his critical verdict on the Chelsea performance.

“We need to do the basics better. In the last couple of games we have conceded so many goals. The two boxes are the key areas. We scored two then conceded two at home. That is hard. Sometimes you need a 1-0 win. We have not been as sharp or as fluid as we’ve been before but we scored to go 2-0 and that should have been enough,” Azpilicueta said.

Chelsea slump

It was another result to forget on Saturday against a Wolves team that went into today with no form.

Chelsea have had some favourable fixtures lately to try pick up some momentum, but they’re really struggling to put teams away.

Of course, it was excellent to see Lukaku scored his 13th and 14th goal of the season. The truth is the Blues have needed him earlier in the season, though.

Meanwhile, the defensive solidity has completely evaporated lately.
