Leicester City centre-back Wesley Fofana shouldn’t join Chelsea this summer, according to ESPN pundit Steve Nicol.

Fofana, 21, is a talented Leicester youngster linked with a potential switch to Stamford Bridge.

It’s been reported that Chelsea are pressing to sign the Foxes defender, who could be prized away from the King Power Stadium for a total package of £80million.

Fofana should’t join Chelsea

ESPN’s Nicol warns Leicester’s 21-year-old star that he’s not yet at the level to join Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side.

His first-team career has seen him impress at Saint-Etienne and Leicester so far, but it would be a significant jump up where he’s under far more scrutiny.

“If Fofana goes to Chelsea he’s off his head. The kid’s not ready, he burst onto the scene – you could say – but he’s not anywhere close to being the finished article. His biggest problem is his starting position,” Nicol told ESPN.

“Playing for Leicester week-in, week-out even while you’re making mistakes, you’ll learn quicker and eventually you’re then going to be the finished article. You’re not going to be doing that at Chelsea if you’re not playing regularly, he needs to play regularly.”

Strongly disagree

In our view Nicol is way off the mark in his assessment of Fofana.

Of course, football is a game of opinions and nobody will know how the Leicester talent will fare at the Bridge until he actually joins.

However, regular watchers of Leicester know this kid is already special.

It’s fair to say the French centre-half may not be the complete finished article yet at his age, but Leicester’s backline looks so much stronger with him at the heart of it.

He’s showing signs of rediscovering his best after a long-term injury, while before that he was dominant in many Premier League displays.

His pace, aggression and confidence at the back means he’s ready to play for one of the Premier League’s big boys. Would he be able to handle the pressure of a gigantic transfer fee, though?
