Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca and his coaching staff were particularly enraged by the players for one incident in yesterday’s match against Servette.

Chelsea will be playing in this year’s Conference League group stages if they get through their play-off tie against Swiss club Servette.

The Blues recorded a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night in the first leg, with goals from Christopher Nkunku and Noni Madueke. It puts the English club in a strong position for next week’s second leg away from home.

Mykhailo Mudryk wasted his opportunity to seriously impress, while some teammates did the opposite and raised their hands up with good performances.

Enzo Maresca and staff fume at Chelsea players

Journalist Nizaar Kinsella reported via X that Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, along with nearly all his coaching staff, raged at the players on the pitch for one moment early in the first-half.

The Blues players were slow to react to back-to-back short corner routines from visitors Servette during yesterday’s European tie.

In fairness, Maresca is definitely a meticulous tactician, so you can understand why the above would frustrate him.

He certainly had to keep driving high standards last season when he was Leicester City boss, winning 31 from 46 league matches in the Championship. Admittedly, the standard was a bit lower in the second tier.

Leadership at Chelsea

It’s down to the leaders on the pitch to ensure lapses in concentration don’t happen and that standards remain high.

Interestingly, there’s already been two different captains during Maresca’s first two games in charge. Enzo Fernandez wore the armband last weekend in the league defeat to Manchester City, while Moises Caicedo led the team out versus Servette.

There’s still club captain Reece James to come back from his injury and suspension. Also, Maresca admitted he’s thinking of making Levi Colwill a leader, as quoted by Chelsea’s YouTube channel.

The Blues definitely lacked leadership throughout large parts of the 2023/24 campaign with their young group, but hopefully that’s slowly being addressed under the new management.
