Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has certainly faced his share of criticism since taking over the club back in 2022.
Now three years into his tenure, Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have overseen improvement at Stamford Bridge, however they are yet to take the plunge towards becoming genuine Premier League title contenders.
The Blues have the chance to book their place in the semi-finals of the League Cup tonight with the trip to Cardiff City, and doing so would bring some much-needed reprieve to Enzo Maresca.
How Chelsea reached the EFL Cup quarter-finals
The boss seems to have had gripes with some of Chelsea’s summer transfer business. There is certainly an argument to be made that the squad has so far not been stronger overall.

One position that has seen improvements is the goalkeeper role, with Robert Sanchez nailing down the number one position since the departure of Djordje Petrovic.
The shot stopper joined Bournemouth over the summer, after Petrovic’s demands of being the number one at Stamford Bridge were not honoured.
The decision was a risk after the Serbian’s impressive campaign at Strasbourg, as well as a season where he had largely kept Sanchez himself on the bench.
Both goalkeepers have played 16 Premier League games this season, however the Spaniard’s record is far more impressive based on the amount of goals conceded.
| Goalkeeper | Games Played (PL) | Goals Conceded | Clean Sheets |
| Robert Sanchez | 16 | 13 | 9 |
| Djordje Petrovic | 16 | 28 | 5 |
Petrovic failed to impress in Bournemouth’s most recent Premier League game against Manchester United. He conceded four goals, and really should have kept out at least one of them.

Sanchez’s long-term position still not secure
Despite a strong campaign so far, there is still no clarity over whether Chelsea will add to their goalkeeper department in an upcoming transfer window.
Who is Chelsea’s best goalkeeper?
Mike Maignan has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with his contract at AC Milan set to expire at the end of the season.
Youngster Mike Penders has impressed greatly as Petrovic’s replacement at Strasbourg, and Chelsea have high hopes for what he will deliver as a first team player.
Whoever is between the sticks next season, Boehly should feel comfortable in the decision he made over the summer to allow Petrovic to leave that it was the right call.
