‘They dominate’: Pat Nevin says two Chelsea players are sometimes brilliant playing together

Pat Nevin sometimes loves the combination between Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in the Chelsea team.

Aside from N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Kovacic are Chelsea’s two most senior central midfielders.

The duo both started during Graham Potter’s first game in charge for the 1-1 draw against Red Bull Salzburg, so it’s going to be interesting to see how important they become for the club’s new head coach.

Jorginho and Kovacic combination

Nevin has highlighted the brilliant partnership that exists between the aforementioned duo.

“When Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho are in sync, they dominate the midfield because they know each other’s play and movement so well and implicitly trust in each other’s ability,” Nevin said.

There’s no doubt Jorginho and Kovacic are two of the most technically gifted players at Stamford Bridge, which is why it’s no surprise you get a good connection on the pitch.

It’s true, Chelsea do look like a strong outfit when both are linking up well in the centre of the park.

One obvious hurdle Potter will have when trying to use both is injury problems, as Kovacic has become a little injury prone in recent times. The 28-year-old recently suggested that he doesn’t feel fully fit despite returning from an injury to play.

For Jorginho, it’s about keeping his standards high. The 30-year-old can dictate games at the base of midfield, but sometimes is caught out in a bad way for his lack of pace and mobility.

Potter hasn’t really coached players before with the kind of pedigree and CV as players like Jorginho and Kovacic, so how will he be able to handle these superstar names?

If he has the squad buying into his philosophy, then everything else should fall into place.

There’s no doubt the way he sets up his midfield is going to be absolutely crucial.
