‘They’re comfortable’: Graham Potter claims new Chelsea formation really suits two of his players

Graham Potter has claimed to Football London that Chelsea returning to a three-back system is a massive benefit for both Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

The manager rolled the dice one last time against Leeds United, fully aware he would likely be sacked if he did not secure all three points.

A Wesley Fofana goal did give them a narrow win, however the real test comes tomorrow against Borussia Dortmund.

Chilwell was one of the stronger performers against Leeds, with his attacking abilities given the opportunity to shine once again. It was the first time he had played wing-back since his return from injury.

James was unable to start on the other side, with Potter looking towards the Champions League clash despite the importance the Premier League game had on his personal career.

New system suits James and Chilwell

He has claimed that the system, which is likely to be used again tomorrow, is the perfect way to use his flying wing-backs.

He said: “Ben and Reece have been unavailable for us for a long time so we’ve had to find different solutions. But clearly that’s two roles [wing-back] that they’re comfortable in and brings out their quality.”

Ruben Loftus-Cheek featured in that role at the weekend, and although he gave a strong showing it is obvious that he is only a makeshift in that position.

This will leave Blues fans desperate for the 23-year-old to be able to return at Stamford Bridge tomorrow, with the fate of their season as well as the manager’s future at stake.

The system has seemed to bring the best out of other players too. Raheem Sterling enjoyed a strong showing at the weekend, and Potter has already near enough confirmed that he will feature for the Blues again in tomorrow’s big game.
