Ian Wright suggests Chelsea are only a new goalkeeper and a new striker away from drastically improving next season.
The Blues have been the biggest underachievers in the Premier League this campaign, finishing in 12th place after Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle United on the final day.
Now, Chelsea fans can enjoy the summer break and look forward to a fresh season in a couple of months time.
In our view, there’s drastic changes we can make during this next period to make sure the team are in a much stronger position for the start of the 2023/24 season.
However, BBC pundit Wright suggests Chelsea aren’t a million miles off the pace.
Wright has identified two areas of the pitch that Chelsea should focus on improving in the summer transfer window.
He believes that the Blues could do with signing a new goalkeeper, with current keepers Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy not totally convincing. In addition, the signing of a centre-forward is crucial.
When asked what incoming Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino needs to do to galvanise the eam, Wright told Match of the Day: “I don’t think he needs to do much because of the calibre of coach he is and how good he is with young players once he organises that team. If you look at what they’ve got, probably [sign] a goalkeeper, definitely a number nine, but when you look at what they’ve got, they’ve got enough pieces.”
It’s pretty obvious Chelsea need a goalscorer added to the squad next season. We finished on 38 goals in a 38-game league season, which highlights just how toothless the side are going forward.
As for the goalkeeper position, Kepa has shown signs of improvements and finished third in the voting for the club’s player of the year award. However, we do understand question marks against the Spaniard’s name.
Chelsea do possess a talented young group that should improve with time, but we would definitely throw a new defensive midfielder into the mix as a priority signing this summer.
