Chelsea defender Thiago Silva managed to break a record yesterday after scoring against Manchester City.
Thiago Silva‘s header was Chelsea‘s first goal in an exciting 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge and drew his side level in the first half after Erling Haaland had given the visitors the lead from the penalty spot.
It was a big goal for Chelsea but also the Brazilian, who has now become the Blues’ oldest scorer at 39, according to the club.
Next up for Silva and his team-mates is a trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United.
Eddie Howe’s side will be looking to bounce back after losing 2-0 to Bournemouth but will have to wait until after the international break.
Thiago Silva continues to show his worth
Silva may be turning 40 next year, but it really does not mean anything. He is still having a huge impact at Stamford Bridge.
It is not just the goal he managed to score yesterday. The Brazil international has been an ever-present under Mauricio Pochettino this season, starting all 12 of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far.
As per WhoScored, Silva is currently making 3.8 clearances per game, which is the highest average in the Blues’ squad.
The centre-back’s contract expires at the end of the season, but it is clear to see from the above that he is still performing. Bearing that in mind, Chelsea should look to hand him a new deal instead of allowing him to return to Brazil, which seems to be a possibility.
Replacing a player like Silva is just not going to be easy. If the former Paris Saint-Germain captain’s legs have not gone yet, then why should his current employers let him go? There are not too many reasons. Releasing him could be quite a counterproductive move.
