The long and illustrious career of former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva is set to continue after making a decision on his next club.

Thiago Silva is currently in a bit of a transition phase, late on in his career after a trophy-winning stint with FC Porto in Europe. The 41-year-old defender moved to the Portuguese side in early 2026 to maintain his competitive edge at the highest level for potential international selection, but he missed out on Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad, alongside Joao Pedro.

As he transitions into the final stages of his playing career, Silva has explicitly stated his desire to move into management or a technical backroom role once he officially hangs up his boots.

Chelsea’s hierarchy would surely be receptive to Silva’s ambition at some point in the future, but no offer has been made.

Thiago Silva decision rules out a Chelsea return

Fluminense have announced that Thiago Silva will be returning this summer on a contract until the end of the year.

Thiago Silva’s previous stints at Fluminense played an important part in his career. After developing in their academy, he helped the first team from 2006 to 2008, winning the 2007 Copa do Brasil.

He returned in 2024, captaining the team through late 2025 and leading them to the Club World Cup semi-finals.

Of course, this is his decision for now, but once he potentially retires at the end of the year, it opens up the potential for a role at a club like Chelsea.

Thiago Silva has already flirted with a Chelsea return

Earlier on this year, Thiago Silva revealed his plans to try and coach at one of his former clubs, including Chelsea, after leaving FC Porto.

Of course, this wouldn’t make sense right now, given Xabi Alonso’s arrival and his own coaches and backroom staff, but he’d be perfect in the future.

His experience at the heart of the defence makes him a candidate as a defensive coach with the Blues, which was desperately needed last season under Liam Rosenior.

He’s the type of voice that the players would listen to and respect.
