Chelsea summer signing Thiago Silva has indicated that he might not stay at Stamford Bridge beyond the 2020/21 season amid uncertainty over his contract.

The west London outfit are known to have a strict policy regarding contracts for players over the age of 30.

Some older players, such as Willy Caballero and Olivier Giroud, have also been also in a situation where their contracts are assessed on a seasonal basis.

Silva is also facing a similar challenge, as he will have to convince the club if he wants to extend his Chelsea career beyond this season.

The 36-year-old joined the Blues on a free transfer and signed a one-year contract, with the club having an option of a 12-month extension.

It does not worry Silva, however, despite his desire to make the Brazil squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

He told the club for upcoming Saturday’s matchday programme (via Goal): “I’m totally relaxed about the contract and whether Chelsea will want to renew it or not, I don’t know.

“If I haven’t met expectations or contributed then we’ll sit down and talk about that. But I’m not worried at all.

“I will do my best possible and really contribute to this team, this new project. I’ve accepted this new challenge, it’s going to be really good for me.

“Everyone knows that my ambition is to play in the World Cup in two years’ time when I’ll be 38. That’s a great responsibility.”

His leadership and influence in the dressing room could also play a big part when Chelsea and Frank Lampard eventually have to make a decision over Silva’s contract.

In his last season at the club, John Terry had a big role in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign under Antonio Conte in 2016/17 despite the former captain’s limited game time.

Although it remains unclear whether Silva would agree to such a role considering it would not really help his World Cup dream.
