Three predictions for Chelsea in 2020

2019 has been a fascinating year for Chelsea. Winning the Europa League against your London rivals, the goalkeeper drama in the Carabao Cup final, losing your star-man, and bringing in a club legend as the manager. There is more, but what will the next year bring? Here are three predictions for Chelsea in 2020.

Progressing to the latter stages of the Champions League

After finishing second in the group-stages, Chelsea have been handed a tough draw against Bayern Munich in the last-16.

Some are fearful of how the Blues defence will cope with the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry. Doubt this Chelsea side at your peril. They proved on Sunday they can defend superbly against top opposition, and they certainly have the midfield and attacking qualities to cause the German side real issues.

Add in the fact that there could be some new faces at Stamford Bridge by the time the two sides meet, and Chelsea have a real chance. If they can get past Bayern, who knows how far Lampard’s side could go.

Finishing inside the top-four

This is the least bold prediction of the three, seeing as Chelsea currently sit four points inside the top four. However, there is lots of football still to be played.

The result against Tottenham proved many doubters wrong and reminded everyone of the power of this young Blues side. With an opportunity to strengthen the squad in January, Lampard could make the squad even better.

With several traditional top-six sides continuing to falter, expect Chelsea to finish in the Champions League spots in 2020.

Signing Jadon Sancho

This one is interesting. Chelsea have been heavily linked with making a move for European starlet Jadon Sancho, but a January move seems unlikely.

If the Blues can gain Champions League qualification and show signs of becoming one of the world’s top sides again this season, Sancho could be tempted by a move to the Bridge.

A childhood Chelsea fan, the Dortmund winger has some friends already at the club and would slot straight into the team on the right side of the attack. It would be a huge statement of intent but could happen sometime in 2020.
